1 dozen smartphones, sim cards found in pre-dawn raid at Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu

In a predawn swoop inside the fortified Kot Bhalwal Central jail, located on the outskirts of Jammu, the special investigating teams belonging to the Criminal Investigation department, CI Wing of Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday recovered around one dozen smartphones, mobile phones, SIM cards, bluetooth speakers and other accessories including chargers, ear plugs, etc along with incriminating material from different barracks inside the jail premises.

Around 300 security personnel led by senior officers conducted thorough searches inside the jail premises on receipt of intelligence inputs about the regular use of mobile phones by the jail inmates to remain in touch with their handlers.

At present more than 900 convicts, undertrials, and detenues have been lodged inside the central jail.

According to a senior officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Prisons department, “Around 300 policemen were deployed inside the jail premises to carry out thorough searches inside the different jail barracks. The raids continued for around five hours”. The senior officer told The Pioneer, “Smartphones and SIM cards recovered during the raids have been handed over to the officials of the cyber cell, forensic wing of the police department for detailed investigations”.

The officer also revealed at present several terrorists of Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and those picked up by the National Investigation Team in different cases of hawala transaction, terror funding cases were lodged inside the central jail and may have been staying in regular touch with their handlers outside the jail.

“Some of the local criminals were also believed to be using these mobile phones”, the officer of the J&K Prisons department told The Pioneer.
