After Jammu and Kashmir, Centre to hold all-party meet on Ladakh

After Narendra Modi held a meeting with the political parties from Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre has now taken a similar step with parties from Ladakh.

Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has confirmed their invitation for the all-party meeting which will take place on July 1. The Apex Body Leh has also been invited.

The KDA has already finalised the demands it will place before the BJP-led central government. Restoration of Article 370 and 35A and statehood for the entire Ladakh are the two most important issues that the KDA will raise.

In a recent press conference, the Apex Body Leh had demanded a legislature for Ladakh. The Apex Body is also spearheading an agitation for the 6th Schedule for Ladakh.

The 6th Schedule gives special provisions for tribal-designated areas, making local residents the only claimants for ownership of land and government jobs.

Meanwhile, PM Modi on Thursday chaired an all-party meeting comprising 14 leaders from J&K to discuss the prevailing situation in the Union Territory and its future course of action at his residence in New Delhi.

This was the first such outreach exercise from the Centre since August 2019 when it abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two UTs.

The Prime Minister assured leaders from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) that the central government is in favour of holding assembly elections in J&K and also restoring its statehood once the delimitation exercise is over.
